What's different from a regular 2500
Both generations of the modern Power Wagon are built on the Ram 2500, with off-road hardware added at the factory. For suspension planning, the important pieces are an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, Bilstein monotube shocks, Power Wagon-specific springs and bump stops, front and rear locking differentials and a factory winch. Each of those changes which aftermarket parts make sense.
The 2014-on Power Wagon is the same truck as the 2014-on Ram 2500 4x4, just with taller coils. Everything Dodge Off Road makes for the 2014-current Ram 2500 4x4 fits the 2014-on Power Wagon.
2005-2012 Power Wagon
- Front: solid axle on coil springs, using the same link-style front as other 2500s of that era (see the generations page).
- Rear: leaf springs. Dodge described a single-stage leaf rear with softer spring settings than a standard 2500.
- Sway bar: an electronic disconnecting front bar. Dodge said the driver could disconnect it in 4-High or 4-Low below 18 mph, and it reconnected automatically above that speed.
- Front weight: a factory winch sits in the bumper. Keep it in mind when choosing front spring rates and when adding a heavier aftermarket bumper.
2014-on Power Wagon
- Front: the Heavy Duty three-link radius-arm front, with what Ram described as high-movement joints where the arms meet the axle, for extra articulation.
- Rear: the five-link coil rear introduced on the 2014 2500.
- Height: it's a 2500 with taller coils. At the 2014 launch Ram described the Power Wagon's suspension as having "more than two inches of lift" from the factory, with Bilstein shocks.
- Sway bar: the electronic disconnecting front bar carried over.
Planning a lift on a Power Wagon
- Parts: anything DOR builds for the 2014-current Ram 2500 4x4 fits a 2014-on Power Wagon. The one thing to remember is height: the taller coils mean it starts higher than a regular 2500, so lift or spacer heights quoted for a 2500 start from a lower baseline.
- Keep the disconnect working. A height change alters the sway bar end-link angles, and the bar still has to reconnect cleanly on the road. That's why DOR makes Power Wagon-specific end links.
- Caster and axle centering still apply. On 2014-on trucks it's the same radius-arm story as any other 2500: a lift reduces caster and shifts the axle, and drop brackets, replacement arms or long arms correct it. See the caster section.
- Payload. Off-road equipment weighs something. Read your door label before adding a bumper, winch upgrade, rack and a full camping load. See the towing and payload page.
- Shocks. The factory Bilsteins are valved for the factory springs. Change springs and the shocks may need to change too.
